The Interstitial Cystitis Support Group
The Interstitial Cystitis Support Group was set up in 1994
by two sisters who suffered from the disease. They felt
that so little was known about the condition here in the
UK, although through the IC Association in America they
found there were many sufferers here, that they wished to
do something about it.
The group has an ever-expanding membership which includes
health professionals who wish to learn more about the disease
and the current therapies and treatments which are being
used to counteract its symptoms.
Since its launch, the group has produced quarterly newsletters
to give members up-to-date information on treatments. In
every issue there are also several pages dedicated to the
experiences and thoughts of the members, as their own practical
advice and approach to IC proves invaluable to newly diagnosed
sufferers.
A video has been produced about IC and the effect it can
have on a person’s life. It features several of our
members recounting their own experiences, and giving practical
tips on everyday living. It has been produced to give practical
help the newly diagnosed sufferer, and to help their family
understand how IC can affect someone close to them. The
video is narrated by Dr Chris Steele, the resident doctor
on ITV’s' 'This Morning'. A second video has also
been produced to provide information to health practitioners
on the differences between IC and bacterial cystitis. It
is 8 minutes long and narrated by Clive Mantle (Mike Barratt
of Holby City and Casualty)
The group has received funding from the National Lottery
Charities Board to fund a full time member of staff for
three years from 1997. The group however relies heavily
on its voluntary local co-ordinators, and is dependent upon
its members and their donations to continue its work.
