CancerLink
Cancerlink is a leading national cancer charity working
in the field of cancer self help and support. Founded in
1982 by people with personal and professional experience
of cancer, Cancerlink provides access to support to people
living with cancer, their partners, families, friends, carers
and health professionals.
The charity has pioneered gaining recognition of cancer
patient’s rights to information and access to support,
and launched a Declaration of Rights of People With Cancer
in 1990, the first initiative of it’s kind.
The Chair of Cancerlink’s Board of Trustees is Professor
Jessica Corner, Europe’s first Professor of Cancer
Nursing, and Director of the Centre for Cancer and Palliative
Care Studies at the Institute of Cancer Research based at
the Royal Marsden.
Promoting Good Practice, Strengthening Support Networks:
Cancerlink offers a range of training courses, consultancy
and development, and information to over 700 cancer self
help and support groups and organisations throughout the
UK. Working in partnership with these groups, Cancerlink
has developed Good Practice Guidelines, to help the groups
provide high quality support to people living with cancer.
Providing Support Through Shared Experience
Cancerlink also offers free confidential information and
support to people affected by cancer, their friends, carers,
partners and families, through our confidential freephone
support link, by letter, and through a wide range of publications
available free to people affected by cancer.
Cancerlink’s publications available free to people
affected by cancer, address the emotional and practical
issues involved in living with cancer, and include booklets
on Men and Cancer, Close Relationships and Cancer, Talking
to Children When An Adult Has Cancer, and Caring At Home
When Cancer Cannot Be Cured.
Many people who experience cancer find it helpful to contact
others who share their experience. There are now over 700
cancer self help and support groups and organisations around
the country, some of which can offer one-to-one support
or befriending services. Our support link team can help
you find a group that suits you in your locality.
Cancerlink believe in the value of shared experience to
people affected by cancer, and produce an annual directory
of cancer self help and support, free to people affected
by cancer, that lists local and national self help and support
groups, and organisations helping people find support close
to home.
Giving People With Cancer A Say In Future Cancer
Care:
It is vital the views and experiences of cancer patients
are taken into account in decision making about future cancer
services. Many people living with cancer want to use their
experience to help improve cancer care in the future. Cancerlink
is co-ordinating a new national network of cancer service
users which will link with self help and support groups
in their region, called CancerVOICES. Cancerlink will work
with health professionals, service users and the self help
and support groups, to help people to use their experience
to influence the development of future cancer services.
Working To Improve Patient-Professional Communication:
Cancerlink works to improve communication between patients
and professionals through projects such as CancerVOICES,
conferences and promoting good practice and the value of
cancer self help and support. Our Board of Trustees and
Advisory Groups on specific projects include health professionals.
