GARLIC
MODEST CHOLESTEROL EFFECT WITH GARLIC
One of the longest garlic studies ever conducted on cardiovascular
risk factors was a double-blind crossover study involving
41 moderately hypercholesterolemic men, who took either
9 aged garlic extract capsules daily (800mg per capsule)
or placebo for 6 months, followed by a 4 month period in
which the subjects switched treatment groups.
The garlic group experienced a modest 6.0-7.0% reduction
in total serum cholesterol levels compared to placebo and
baseline respectively. Thirteen other studies have found
more impressive decreases in total serum cholesterol using
600-900mg powdered garlic, showing an average 10.3% reduction
in serum cholesterol. When 1-3 cloves of fresh garlic were
consumed daily the reduction was an even higher 16% reduction.
It is therefore very important what type of garlic is used
in research studies.

GARLIC PROLONGS ELASTICITY OF THE AORTA
German researchers studied the effects of long-term garlic
use (Allium sativum L.) on elasticity of the aorta in healthy,
nonsmoking adults. Results suggested that regular long-term
garlic powder intake attenuated age- and pressure-related
increase in aortic stiffness, but the precise mechanism
remains elusive.
