Healthguider Women’s Health

Watch your Vits with the Pill

The contraceptive pill seems almost ubiquitous. Its potential side effects have also been well publicised but little has been mentioned about its effects on a woman’s nutritional status.

  1. The Pill raises blood levels of vitamin A.
  2. Reduces tryptophan metabolism.
  3. Increases requirements for Vit.B6, Vit B12, folic acid, Vit C, Vit E, manganese and zinc.

If you take the Pill it might be worth supplementing with the above vitamins and mineral.

A word of warning; very high doses of vitamin C (more that 1 gram per day) should be avoided. The Pill increases the activity of vitamin C at this level.
