Walking To beat Strokes
According to the latest research walking can actually reduce
a woman's risk of a stroke by up to 20 to 30 percent. Stroke
is one of the leading causes of death for both men and women
in the western world and the largest cause of extended disability.
However, a new study of over 72,000 nurses happens to be
the first large-scale examination of the relationship between
stroke and physical exercise. Dr. JoAnn Manson, one of the
medical scientists who led the research, says,
"it's never too late to start."
Manson, chief of preventative medicine at Harvard's Brigham
and Woman's Hospital, says her study found that women who
had been couch potatoes into their 40s and 50s showed drops
in blood pressure, a lowered tendency to blood clotting
and cleaner blood vessels after starting to exercise.
She added that increasing the walk to 45 minutes or even
more may reduce stroke risk by as much as 50 percent.
