Deep Vein Thrombosis
Deep vein thrombosis or DVT is the acute development of
blood clots in veins, most commonly those of the pelvis
or legs. DVTs are known to occur more frequently in women
over the age of 35, however the precise cause of clots is
not always identifiable. Certainly particularly risk factors
have been well documented.
Typical risk factors include:
- Prolonged inactivity.
- Extended oral contraceptive use – particularly
beyond the age of 35.
- High altitude (greater than 14,000 feet).
- Smoking.
- Excess weight.
Note these factors are additive so bear them in mind and
take action to reduce your risk.
