When The Shoe Fits

For anyone restarting on a fitness programme few forms of exercise can beat brisk walking for providing a relaxed and safe re-introduction.

However make it a priority to ensure you fit yourself with a good pair of shoes. It is easy to believe that running shoes are adequate for the job when in fact they tend to be far too cushioned. Furthermore they align you in an imperfect posture for effective and comfortable walking.

When purchasing a pair of walking shoes always consider the following:

  1. Good supportive shoes require extra stability and strengthened arch supports.
  2. Seek out a shoe with a low rounded heel and a firm cup. This provides the required stability.
  3. To ensure a smooth heel-to-toe motion while walking choose a shoe with a sole which is thicker in the middle than at heel or toe.
  4. Ensure there is a flexible forefoot. This will allow your toes room to spread as they push down on the ground.
  5. Make sure there is no pinching.
  6. Ensure that the arch of the shoe comfortably supports the arch of your foot.
  7. A good guide: there should be a thumbnail's width between the end of the shoe and your toes.
