Treadmills Unveiled

Treadmills are the most popular home exercise machines for aerobic fitness. Their great advantage is that they readily simulate real life using the authentic movements of walking, running or jogging. In addition, extensive studies have shown that the use of a treadmill results in the burning of more calories than any other exercise equipment.

Key to finding a good treadmill is to research the different types of machines before you buy one so that yours does not end up as an addition to the furniture. It is strongly recommended that you bear the following in mind:

  1. Non-motorized machines are suitable for walking but do not withstand vigorous jogging.
  2. For jogging choose a more stable machine.
  3. For a motorized machine an emergency shut off is essential.
  4. Ensure the running belt is at least 15 inches wide and 50 inches long.
  5. The incline of the machine should have a 10% grade that can be adjusted during exercise.
  6. The motor should allow for speeds of at least 8 miles per hour.
