Relax With A Stretch

You know, keeping fit isn't just about what you do when you are actually exercising. What you do in between your exercise bouts is also important - including unwinding from stress.

The chest stretch is an excellent exercise for a five-minute break - when you've been stuck in front of the computer at work for instance. Stand with your abdominal muscles contracted, keep your knees in line with your toes, and keep your lower back in a rounded position. Clasp your hands behind your back and pull your shoulder blades together. Stretch to the point of mild tension. Hold the stretch for 10 to 30 seconds. Release, and repeat the stretch three to five times.

You can also perform the chest stretch while bending forward from your waist and lifting your clasped hands away from your lower back toward the ceiling.

You're stretching the pectoralis major and the anterior deltoids during these exercises.
