Sleep & Fitness – An Introduction
We should never underestimate how important adequate sleep
is in relation to good fitness. During sleep the body is
renewed and restored, and during deep sleep the levels of
the important hormone human growth hormone (hGH) rise –
this is important in the maintenance and repair of muscles.
Any disturbances of sleep, or indeed inadequate amounts
of sleep, will greatly effect these repair processes and
the levels of hGH. The end result might be reduced muscle
resilience, and ultimately increased risk of injury whilst
carrying out exercise routines.
An optimum sleep length for good muscle health is eight
hours per night.
