Feverfew - A Natural Remedy for Migraine
Feverfew is one of the most documented natural treatments
for migraine. It is a herb which is related to the chrysanthemum
which has a distinct vasodilatory action when taken orally.
In a good proportion of migraine sufferers there is a quite
notable reduction in the number of attacks after commencing
treatment.
Generally feverfew can be purchased as an extract. One
or two tablets or capsules should be taken each day and
the treatment continued indefinitely if required. The most
active components of feverfew are known as parthenolides.
Ensure that any product you choose contains these substances
in significant quantity to ensure optimum effect.
Remember that feverfew should always be used as part of
a complete treatment plan which also includes:
- Cutting out triggers which you may have in your diet
e.g. chocolate, red wine and/or white wine, cheese and
certain fish.
- Stopping sources of caffeine - a well-known migraine
trigger, especially if taken in great quantity. Caffeine
is present in coffee, tea, chocolate and soft drinks.
- Addressing factors which cause stress and alleviating
them appropriately.
Always ensure that your family doctor is aware that you
are taking feverfew - it is known to interact with certain
drugs - and be guided his or her advice.
