Don’t Eat Your Heart Out
Men still beat women hands down when it comes to suffering
from heart disease. There’s no getting away from it
the male of the species is most certainly his own worst
enemy. Not least is his neglect of his nutritional health.
So here goes ... some tips for eating for a healthier heart:
- Eat as broad a variety of foods as possible –
increasing your chances of receiving all those highly
important vitamins and minerals.
- Eat more veg and fruit – they’re packed
full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants (which can help
to stop heart disease) and fibre.
- Maintain a carbohydrate intake of 50 to 60% of your
daily calories – a greater proportion should be
complex carbohydrates (wholemeal bread, pasta, rice, potatoes):
these are less likely to be laid down as fat.
- Reduce fat intake to less than 30% of your total calories:
concentrate on monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats
with reduced oxidant activities. Increase those essential
fats from seeds and oily fish.
- Ensure you have at least 25 grams of fibre per day
(unless contraindicated for health reasons) – good
sources are vegetables, and wholegrain foods.
