Low Down On Protein

Anywhere you look in the human body you will find proteins.- hormones, muscles, bone, skin, hair and the vital organs. It is the body’s reliance on protein to maintain structure that needs us to ensure we have adequate dietary proteins.

After digestion proteins are broken down into their building blocks, the amino acids. These are more readily absorbed into the blood stream and transported to the parts of the body where they are required. They are then reassembled as protein molecules.

Following a meal high in protein there is a surge in protein building by the liver and muscle. Any excess protein is converted to glucose or used in energy production.
In fasting the body uses up it’s energy stores before then breaking down muscle protein for new energy production. Weakness and muscle wasting can be the consequence.
